HOURS AND SALARY
SALARY:
The weekly minimum is set based on a formula that calculates the federal minimum wage minus a room and board allowance.
The current scholarship for the Au-pair program is $225 per week.
The scholarship will be given to Au-pairs each week by your host family.
Upon arrival in the United States, Au-pairs will receive up to $500 from their host families to spend on an academic course.
As an Au-pair you will be entitled to a minimum of two weeks paid vacation per 12-month period of stay (prorated for periods of less than 12 months), in addition to the normal minimum of one and a half days off per week and at least one full weekend off per month.
HOURS:
- maximum of 10 hours per day
- maximum of 45 hours per week
- minimum of 1 1/2 days of weekly rest
(half-day rest means working LESS than 5 hours that day) - Must have a minimum of one full weekend off per month (Friday evening to Monday morning at working hours)
DURATION OF THE PROGRAM
Au-pairs arrive in the U.S. on 12-month J-1 visas with the option to extend for 6, 9, or 12 months once they have successfully completed their first year with a family.
At the end of the homestay period (be it 12, 18, 21, or 24 months) there is a 30-day “leisure” period (before having to return to their home country) that allows the Au-pair a stay or travel to the U.S. at their leisure.
Au-pairs may return to the U.S. for a second term of the program, provided they meet the requirements.
