WHO ARE WE?

Celtic Childcare is an official childcare agency based in Turin that primarily deals with au-pairs, nannies and tutors. Since being fully established in 1997, Celtic Childcare has been a continuing active member of the International Au-Pair Association since 2002.
We are recognized as one of the most important agencies in Italy for native speakers of English, Italian, French, German and Spanish who seek to find suitable families and accommodation. The company is managed and directed by Elizabeth J Lenihan. Although the main headquarters are situated in Turin, we work with other agencies in cities around the world in Ireland, England, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, China and America, all of whom are regulated to work in this sector. Along with our agents abroad, we work to secure fair pay and accommodation for all of those who work for our agencies. In order to further our dedication to this cause, we created the National Association of the Italian Au Pair Agency (ANIAP) to establish and promote guidelines and rules with regards to Au Pairs, host families, tutors and agencies, nationally and internationally operating in this sector.

 

LEGAL BASIS

The legal basis governing the relationship on Au Pairs derives from the European Treaty on Au Pair Placement 11/24/1969. Established by the International Association IAPA, this piece of legislation sets out principles and rules of conduct that are to be adhered to. Celtic Childcare is authorised to carry out their legal obligations by the Ministry of Labour under the legislative decree 276/2003 (prot- 107/RS).

 

THE PURPOSE OF OUR PROGRAMME

The purpose of our agency is to provide au-pairs with new life experiences such as learning a new language, culture and traditions of a different country, basically providing them with the opportunity to discover a completely different way of living. To be an au-pair basically implies that they take an active role within the family e.g. babysitting as part of the exchange programme. An extensive background in child care is not required, provided that they have regularly looked after younger siblings and or babysat before. Although their exchange is not a holiday, it will provide them with many opportunities to make friends, improve their language skills and explore places in their new surroundings.

 

ACCOMODATION AND HOSPITALITY

The candidates are between 18 to 45 years of age and their roles can be aligned to those family members who help out in the home. They must be treated with respect and kindness and welcomed into the family home. They will receive food and board (if possible their own bedroom) and a monthly allowance for their personal expenses, the breakdown of their payment is explained in detail further down. They are also entitled to by law, to follow their religious beliefs.


HOLIDAYS

The usual duration/ working period varies from 3 to 12 months – during the summer this has been known to change and the period of stay is between 2 to 4 months. It should be noted that the au-pair can be requested to leave at any time of the year/ to start at any time of the year.
The au-pair is to work no more than 6 hours a day, for a maximum of 30 hours a week and the Mother’s help no more than 8 hours a day for a maximum of 45 hours a week. The au-pair and mothers help are both entitled and have the right to a day and half break from either Monday to Friday or the entire weekend. Babysitting will be a maximum of two weekly evenings.

 

EXPENSES

The au-pairs are responsible for all expenses related to their outgoing and return journeys. The family should note that they are not generally obligated to cover the total cost of the language courses(should the au-pair request this). As soon as they arrive at their exchange placement, all purchases regarding to items of clothing, personal care and leisure activities are their own expenses.

 

INSURANCE, PERMITS AND HEALTH CARDS

European citizens have the same rights as the citizens of the host nation to access free medical care and first aid throughout Europe (there are some exceptions such as dental treatment). It is a mandatory requirement for non EU residents and for those travelling outside of the EU to obtain private insurance. In order for the au-pairs to access the National Health Service, they must have a valid form of health insurance issued from their country of origin which must be taken to a local health authority (USSL) in their area. They will be issued with a document valid for 12 months and it is easily renewable, detailing a list of doctors. Non-EU citizens can purchase private health insurance via their agent before coming to Italy.

 

CANCELLATION AND ASSISTANCE

If you require any assistance or help during your stay, you are able to contact the family and the agent/agency in your host country. In the event that the family are not happy with the au-pair, they can request to change. The family are required to give a 14 day notice, providing the agency with the time to find a more suitable placement.

 

SAFETY

To ensure and guarantee the safety of our au-pairs, we send agents to potential host families, making sure everything is okay beforehand. Prior to leaving, the host family will be able to contact the au-pair by telephone, granting them the opportunity to get to know each other.

 

ANTI-TERRORISM ACT

The family must report the arrival of their new guest within 24 hours of their arrival and explain the purpose of their stay- they are here living with the family to improve their italian (to denounce terrorism).


THE ROLE OF AN AU-PAIR

Principally, the au pair is responsible for all activities related to taking care of children. Not only the direct management (cleaning, housing, meals, games, walks in the gardens etc.), but also of all those related activities that can take place in the absence of children: tidying and cleaning the children's room, organising their wardrobes and laundry (washing and ironing small things for the children).
In addition to her normal working hours, the au-pair must provide two evenings a week for babysitting (which should be understood as babysitting only). The remaining evenings are free for the au-pair. For every 6 month stay, the au-pair is entitled to 10 days of paid leave and entitled to have all public holidays free from work. The hours maybe recuperated at a later date or if they have to work, must be compensated financially.

 

AU-PAIR

The au-pair is required to perform the tasks outlined above, working a maximum of 30 hours a week (usually divided into 5 hours a day). The au-pair should he/she wish to, be able to attend an Italian language course for foreigners.
Minimum fee a month: 300€ Maximum weekly hours: 30

 

TUTOR

A tutor is responsible for teaching either children or parents English/French/German. They are well equipped for teaching their language. The vast majority have high levels of education usually including a degree and some even masters. Many have already taught in their home countries. They must be permitted to learn the Italian language. They are not responsible for and do not do household chores, however may assist where necessary as if they were a family member.
Minimum fee a month: 400€ Maximum weekly hours: 30

 

MOTHERS HELP

A mothers help is a person who is willing to provide further assistance for the family both with the children and housework. The responsibilities are the same as an au-pair with the exception of longer working hours and salary.

Minimum fee a month: € 600 Maximum weekly hours: 45

 

NANNY

Nannies have specific professional training and qualifications in childcare or from at least a year’s experience in this field- working with families or in nurseries and children’s hospitals. As the hours and tasks vary from family to family, so is the salary (from 1200€ to 2000 € per month).

Minimum fee a month: € 1,200 Hours worked per week: Variable

 

BABYSITTER

Babysitters are native speakers who perform the same duties of an au-pair but do not live in the family home.
Minimum fee a month: € 600 Minimum weekly hours: 17
Minimum fee a month: € 1,100 Minimum weekly hours: 36
Minimal fee extra hours: 8 € (10 € if evening)

 

LIVE OUT TEACHER FOR CHILDREN

Teachers are native English speakers who do not reside in the family home. They teach English to children.
Minimum fee: € 15 per hour

 

REGISTRATION FEES

For research and mediation (and related expenses) the family will have to pay
€ 125 (IVA /VAT included) per year (twelve months) to Celtic Childcare.
AU-PAIR/MOTHERS HELP – for placement of up to 5 weeks 225€ + IVA
NANNY/TUTOR - For placement of up to 4 months 350€ + IVA
- For longer placements: 660€ + IVA
In the case of an Australian citizen staying longer than 4 months it will be 200€ extra
BABYSITTER Up to 5 hours daily: 350€ + IVA
More than 5 hours per day: 575€ + IVA
LIVE OUT TEACHER For a live out teacher 200€ + IVA

 

PAYMENT METHOD

The registration fees are to be paid upon initial research, while the final settlements for our services are to be paid within two weeks after the transfer assignment. We undertake to carry out with the utmost seriousness its search service and presentation of the candidates, however, we thoroughly advise the host family to check the personal references provided by the candidates, and we accept no responsibility for the final decision undertaken by the family. If within the first six weeks of the placement serious and unresolvable problems arise making it impossible for the candidate to fulfill their exchange, we are committed to seek a replacement for the family free of any extra charges.
